Scootaloo #FU

The Minnesota RollerGirls is a volunteer-run effort. From the website to the marketing and public relations to the big production of bout night, it’s an “all hands on deck” approach. Meet Scootaloo: a knockout of a skater and a leading brand genius when it comes to publicizing the Minnesota RollerGirls’ work.

Scoots (or Scootie), as she’s called, has been skating since 2006. In 2008, she took over as PR Manager and has helped create and craft much of the buzz that is around our St. Paul based roller derby league. PR with the roller girls back in 2008 consisted mainly of press releases. Now, with the help of Scoots and the PR committee, there’s much more: scheduling practices for students to observe our league (we’ve got a good culture here and people are interested!), booking celebrity guests of honor for bout nights, building annual holiday press kits, and the PR committee works closely with the Marketing, Events and Sponsorship committees as well.

Getting out in the public eye is more than just distributing a press release. That’s just the bait. Scoots is big on making sure rollergirls are out in the public and having a good time. When the public sees skaters, whether it be on TV or an event, chances are they will want in on the fun, too.

Working just as hard off the track, Scoots puts the rollergirls in focus. Through Minnesota RollerGirls, Scoots talks about developing great relationships with KARE 11’s Eric Perkins and morning newscasters, K-Twin Radio, MA Rosko from Fox 9, Twin Cities Live and of course the RiverCentre. Just this year, Scoots and the PR committee accomplished getting the Minnesota RollerGirls on prime time television.

Was it mentioned yet that Scootie outfits the skaters, too? She makes dresses for the Atomic Bombshells and jerseys for the Rockits, Garda Belts, and Minnesota RollerGirls All-Stars. She also sells hot pants to the skaters….and the public! Check it out: www.scutiepie.com.

There are plenty of big ideas that Scootie has for the Minnesota RollerGirls. With next season being the 10th anniversary of the league, there’s bound to be plenty to keep the PR committee (and the rest of the volunteers) busy. But never too much to distract her from being the hard hitter she is on the track.

Oh! And one more promo piece that’s pretty incredible when it comes to Minnesota RollerGirls recognition. This bit when ESPN featured our league!
