Roller Vortex: All-Stars Blow Up Mad Maxines 301-84

By: Fire Wally

The Minnesota RollerGirls All-Stars won another bout in spectacular fashion Saturday night, skating victorious over the Mad Maxines, all-star team of the No Coast Derby Girls from Lincoln, Nebraska. The All-Stars again used coordinated walls and persistent jammers to open up a wide margin of victory, winning by a final score of 301-84

The Mad Maxines drew first blood with a 5-0 jam from Christy Johnson, but the All-Stars followed with a scoring run that put them in a dominant position early and grew their lead throughout the first half. All-Star blockers contained No Coast’s jammers in the pack long enough for Minnesota’s jammers to make multiple scoring passes per jam. Employing precision footwork and tenacious recycling, the “Great Wall of St. Paul” had a triumphant return to the Roy Wilkins Auditorium.

A particularly dominant string of jams for Minnesota started with 18 minutes remaining in the first half with Slambda Phage lining up as jammer against No Coast’s Andrea Thompson. Phage earned lead jammer status quickly while Second Hand Smoke, Crowella De Vil, and MEDUSA pushed the opposing jammer out of bounds first to the infield, then the outside of the track. Phage scored 27 in that jam as the All-Stars wall kept Thompson contained, eventually drawing a cutting the track penalty at the end of the jam.

That began a series of power jam opportunities that the All-Stars used to great advantage. Meg Gronau (AKA Fannie Tanner), Harmony Killerbruise, and Slambda Phage (again) each contributed 20+ point jams, making the score 172-14 with 12 minutes remaining in the half. After a minor No Coast comeback, Harmony ended the half with a 16-point jam, making the score 195-36 Minnesota at the half.

The Mad Maxines showed their best performance of the night through first portion the second half, keeping even with Minnesota for 20 solid minutes. Big jams from No Coast’s Beth Kempf and Anna Cassube helped make back some of the defecit while solid defensive play kept the All-Stars contained for 5 consecutive jams. With 9 minutes remaining in the game, the All-Stars had only increased their halftime margin by 1 point, 239-79.

The All-Stars scoring fire re-ignited in the closing minutes of the game, with Phage, Harmony, and Gronau expanding the All-Stars lead to 301-84 at the end of the bout. Winning with such a wide margin of victory against a closely-ranked opponent should provide a substantial boost to Minnesota’s WFTDA Rankings and continues the All-Stars’ string of big victories as the WFTDA season ramps up.
