Have a Nice Day 2025 Day 2 Recap

Minnesota Nice vs Arizona Rising

Saturday morning opened with a rematch of the Friday nightcap, but this time, it was the B-teams who faced off. Minnesota Nice had met Arizona Rising (#35 NA West, #70 GUR) once before, with Arizona picking up a 271-147 win as part of the 2018 Rust Riot tournament in Seattle.

Princess Slaya opened the bout with a 2-0 jam for Arizona, but BooBoo quickly tied it with a 2-0 jam of her own. Twisted Transistor then scored 4 points to give Minnesota their first lead of the bout, but Kiwi tied it right back up with 4 points for Arizona. Fanny Smack responded by taking the lead back for Minnesota, but she only scored 1 point. Arizona came right back with 4 points by Princess Slaya, putting them back ahead by 3.

That jam also featured the bout’s first penalty (on Minnesota’s Lady Novacaine), but the formerly clean bout then took a penalty-filled turn. It started when BooBoo and Axel combined for 3 jammer penalties in the next jam before either of them got out of the pack. Eventually, with 23 seconds left, BooBoo escaped and scored 4 points to retake the lead for Minnesota. After that, Twisted Transistor added 4 quick points, giving Minnesota their first multi-jam lead of the bout. However, it didn’t last any longer, as a no pass, no penalty situation prevented T-Wrecks from becoming the lead jammer in the next jam. That allowed Gail Satan to score 9 points, though T-Wrecks’s 4 ensured Arizona would have to settle for a 19-19 tie game.

In the next jam, Princess Slaya secured lead in hopes of putting Arizona in front, but a penalty stripped her of her lead privileges. However, Fanny Smack also went to the box, and although Princess Slaya committed another penalty later in the jam, the two split the scoring 8-8, keeping the bout tied. Princess Slaya’s second penalty carried into the next jam, giving Bri Zuss a power start. She raced out to a quick lead and scored 7 points, putting Minnesota ahead 34-27. However, even though this was their largest lead so far, it only lasted one jam: Kiwi answered with a 9-0 jam to retake the lead for Arizona. Axel then scored 4 more points, extending Arizona’s lead to 40-34.

Looking to gain control of the bout for Arizona, Gail Satan secured the next lead jam, but she committed a penalty and lost it. After she was penalized, Marty McFly received a star pass for Minnesota, and she and Gail Satan completed scoring pass after scoring pass. When all was said and done, Marty McFly outscored Gail Satan 19-12, putting Minnesota back on top by a single point. Of course, it didn’t last, as SkEren Jaeger came right back to outscore Fanny Smack 7-4 and give the lead back to Arizona.

Not to be outdone, Bri Zuss answered with a 4-point jam, flipping the 2-point lead in Minnesota’s favor. Kiwi then responded once again for Arizona, racing out of the pack and outscoring Bi Fieri 11-3 to give the visitors a 70-64 advantage. After that, it was Minnesota’s turn to respond, and Twisted Transistor raced along the outside to become the lead jammer. Ragin’ Bajan received a star pass and committed a penalty without ever making an initial pass, giving Twisted Transistor time to post 12 points. Thanks to that jam, Minnesota took a 76-70 lead.

Ragin’ Bajan remained in the box to start the next jam, and T-Wrecks used the power jam to score 4 points and extend the MNRD lead to double digits. In the following jam, Fanny Smack got lead but couldn’t score after being overtaken by Princess Slaya. That led to the same situation that the A-teams faced on Friday: with under 2 minutes left in the half, Minnesota held a 10-point lead with lots of momentum up for grabs. And once again, Minnesota delivered. Bri Zuss used a power jam to score 11 points, giving Minnesota Nice a 91-70 halftime lead, the largest lead either team had held in a half that featured 9 lead changes.

Just like the All-Stars on Friday night, Minnesota Nice continued the momentum into the second half. Bri Zuss opened the half with a 2-1 jam against Princess Slaya. After that, BooBoo secured another lead for Minnesota but was penalized, so she was no longer the lead jammer. However, even though Colette Razorcat got a power jam, BooBoo still won the jam 8-4. Then, it was Minnesota’s turn for a power jam when Gail Satan was sent to the box. Twisted Transistor used the advantage to score a bout-high 20 points, while 8 points out of the box for Gail Satan left the Minnesota lead at 121-83.

T-Wrecks continued the momentum by posting 10 points against Kiwi’s 4, but Arizona finally got a lead jam courtesy of SkEren Jaeger after that. SkEren Jaeger scored 4 points, cutting Arizona’s deficit to 40. However, it didn’t lead to a comeback. Bri Zuss and BooBoo each posted 1-0 jams for Minnesota, then Twisted Transistor exploded for 16 points in a jam where both she and SkEren Jaeger committed penalties almost simultaneously. SkEren Jaeger scored 4 in that jam, which brought the score to 149-95 in Minnesota’s favor.

Fanny Smack kept the MNRD run going with a 4-0 jam, then Bri Zuss took a quick lead along the outside and added 3 more points. Axel responded by taking advantage of a penalty on BooBoo, but she was limited to a 4-3 jam after committing a penalty herself. After that, Arizona got another lead jam courtesy of Gail Satan, who scored 4 points to take them past the century mark, although Minnesota still led 159-103.

Twisted Transistor raced out to a quick lead and scored 2 points to get Minnesota back in the scoring column. After that, Fanny Smack scored 7 more, but a penalty allowed Kiwi to score 4 in that jam. Minnesota blockers also committed multiple penalties in the jam, with Laural Mighty and Speed Rita still in the box at the start of the next jam. That didn’t matter to Bri Zuss, who scored 4 points to extend the MNRD lead to 65.

Gail Satan responded with a huge jam for Arizona, outscoring T-Wrecks 16-4 despite committing a penalty. Arizona built on that to create a bit of a run, as SkEren Jaeger outscored Twisted Transistor 4-2 before back-to-back 4-0 jams by Kiwi and Princess Slaya. Even with the run, Arizona still trailed 178-135, and the run then stopped with a 4-point jam for BooBoo. Just over 40 seconds remained in the bout, and Twisted Transistor secured lead to ensure the next jam would be the last. She scored 8 points, as did SkEren Jaeger, before calling off the jam and ending the bout. With the 190-143 win, Minnesota Nice improves to 3-2 against North America West opposition in WFTDA-sanctioned play.

Minnesota All-Stars vs Texas Texecutioners

In the late afternoon, the Minnesota All-Stars renewed a rivalry with the Texas Rollergirls’ Texecutioners (#5 NA South, #10 GUR). Minnesota had never beaten Texas – the originators of modern flat track roller derby – in four previous tries, including two meetings at the WFTDA Championships. The closest they ever came was a 185-173 loss at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in the first round of the 2015 WFTDA Championships.

Texas jammer Hauss the Boss scored 80 points in that 2015 meeting, and she started on the jammer line in Hopkins. However, her pivot, Peacewar, committed a penalty within seconds, and Lexi Cuter used the pack advantage to score 8 points for Minnesota. Tropical Mechanica responded by securing lead for Texas, but she was knocked to the ground on her second scoring pass and only scored 6 points, keeping Minnesota in front. Chippa Tooth extended the lead in the next jam, but a strong showing for Peacewar after receiving a star pass limited Chippa Tooth to a 5-4 advantage.

Hauss the Boss then took a quick lead along the outside to score 4 points, turning Texas’s 3-point deficit into a 1-point lead. 4 points for Impact Play on a power jam followed, putting the Texecutioners up 5, but Lexi Cuter responded with a 6-0 jam to regain the advantage for Minnesota. Sintripetal Force added 4 points in the next jam, but although she could have called off the jam after the scoring pass, she decided to keep it going. That allowed Hauss the Boss to slip through the pack twice, score 8 points, and give Texas the lead right back.

Chippa Tooth used two jammer penalties by Tropical Mechanica to give Minnesota the lead once again, but a big hit by Peacewar forced her to call off the jam after scoring 8 points. However, that meant Tropical Mechanica was still in the box to start the next jam. Lexi Cuter scored 4 quick points, then weaved through the whole Texas defense for another 4 and called it off just before Tropical Mechanica reached the pack to score. The 8-point jam increased Minnesota’s lead to double digits for the first time, but 4 points by Hauss the Boss in the next jam trimmed the lead back down to 39-30.

In the next jam, Lefse 4 Dead committed a penalty, but a strong Minnesota defense allowed her to she escape the pack first, even after the penalty. Mayhem West also got out late in the jam, but she was ineligible for lead privileges after removing the star. Still, she outscored Lefse 4 Dead 7-4, cutting the margin to 6. After that, Lexi Cuter doubled the MNRD advantage with a 6-point jam, then Sintripetal Force doubled that lead with 12 points on the back of a strong defense. Chippa Tooth followed with 4 points, further increasing the lead to 65-37. It stayed that way after Annaconda and Peacewar were both held scoreless.

Hauss the Boss was sent to the box in the next jam, giving Lefse 4 Dead a power jam. She scored 8 points, then called off the jam after being knocked out of bounds by Hauss the Boss. Minnesota led 73-37 for the first palindrome score of the weekend. That didn’t last long, as Lexi Cuter tacked on 4 points in the next jam to bring the MNRD lead up to 40. Sintripetal Force added 3 more before Hauss the Boss finally stopped the run, securing the Texecutioners’ first lead in 8 jams. She scored 4 points, but Chippa Tooth snuck in a point right before the jam was called off, leaving Minnesota ahead by 40 once again.

Tropical Mechanica appeared to give Texas their second straight lead jam, but she later lost it after committing a penalty. While she was in the box, Annaconda passed the Minnesota star to MadLibs, and the crowd erupted as she scored 7 points. Tropical Mechanica did one better, scoring 8 points in the jam. Texas gained one more point in the next jam courtesy of Hauss the Boss, but Lexi Cuter closed the half with a hard-fought 8-0 jam. Minnesota ended one of their most impressive halves in recent memory with a 96-50 lead.

Needing a second-half comeback, Texas started the half with back-to-back 4-0 jams by Hauss the Boss and Tropical Mechanica. Mayhem West could have given Texas a third straight 4-0 jam, but she kept the jam alive to kill a penalty on her pivot, Peacewar. Chippa Tooth took advantage of the extended jam, only being outscored 6-4 by Mayhem West. That also took Minnesota to the century mark with a 100-64 lead.

In the next jam, Annaconda became the lead jammer but was forced to call it off without scoring after being knocked out of bounds by Hauss the Boss, who had passed the Texas star earlier in the jam. Hauss the Boss was assessed a penalty at the end of the jam. After that, Tropical Mechanica scored 3 points while the Texas defense prevented Lefse 4 Dead from completing her initial pass in the nearly 2-minute jam. While Texas had cut the lead to 33 points, Lexi Cuter responded by posting 12 points and stopping the Texecutioners’ comeback in its tracks.

Sintripetal Force was the first jammer out of the pack in the following jam, but she was called for a track cut. Hauss the Boss was ineligible for lead as well after removing the star, and she also picked up a penalty later in the jam. With only 2 Texas blockers on the track, Sintripetal Force scored 15 points to Hauss the Boss’s 4, taking MNRD’s lead to 127-71. Chippa Tooth followed that by adding 7 more to the hosts’ advantage.

Annaconda secured the next lead jam and scored 4 points, but Hauss the Boss just beat the call-off to score 3 of her own. Spread Eagle then scored 4 spectacular points by balancing on one skate, cutting the Texas deficit to 60. After that, Tropical Mechanica exploded for 12 points to further whittle down the lead. In the following jam, Hauss the Boss took a quick lead along the inside of the track before a MadLibs penalty gave her a power jam. Hauss the Boss scored 14 points, forcing Minnesota to call a timeout up by only 34 with 10:54 left in the bout.

MadLibs remained in the box to start the next jam, and Tropical Mechanica used the advantage to score 2 points. After that, Hauss the Boss gave Texas yet another lead jam – their fifth in a row – but she picked up a penalty later in the jam. Lexi Cuter scored 11 points in the jam, while Peacewar (who received a star pass from Hauss the Boss after the penalty) posted 6. At the very end of the jam, Lexi Cuter was called for a penalty, meaning she started the following jam in the box. Still, she extended Minnesota’s lead to 149-112.

With Lexi Cuter in the box, Spread Eagle became the lead jammer, but tight blocking from Minnesota held her to 2 points. Needing a big next jam, Texas sent Hauss the Boss to the line, but she picked up another forearm penalty to give Annaconda a power jam. Annaconda scored 7 points to give MNRD a 42-point lead, leaving Texas needing a miracle to come back. Tropical Mechanica did her part, securing lead in the next jam and scoring 5 points, but more tough defense from Minnesota killed much of the remaining time.

Minnesota’s lead stood at 156-119 when the next jam started with 1:18 remaining. Chippa Tooth secured lead after 40 hard-fought seconds, ensuring it would be the last jam. After outscoring Olivia Shootin’ John 10-4, she called off the jam, ending the bout in a 166-123 Minnesota victory. In addition to the All-Stars defeating Texas for the first time in their history, MNRD swept the Texas Rollergirls over the weekend after Minnesota Nice had beaten the Texas Chainsaws earlier in the tournament.

Minnesota Nice vs North Star

On Saturday evening, Minnesota Nice closed their tournament with a matchup against their biggest rivals, the Supernovas from North Star Roller Derby (#25 NA Northeast, #32 GUR). Minnesota Nice entered the bout 2-1 against North Star since the teams first met in 2023. North Star was coming off a 162-112 win over the Texas Chainsaws earlier in the day.

Bri Zuss was the first jammer through the pack in the bout, but she cut the track along the outside corner and was sent to the box. Sassberry used the power jam to give North Star an early 4-0 lead. Katarina Hit gave the Supernovas 3 more in the next jam. After that, Twisted Transistor secured Minnesota’s first lead jam and scored 4 points, but Slim Sadie snuck in 2 just before the call-off to leave North Star up 9-4.

In the next jam, North Star couldn’t stay out of the box. Blocker Red Hot Toddy was briefly their only skater on the track, and Skatey Gaga easily scored 12 points on the power jam to take a 16-9 lead for Minnesota. After the jam, North Star called a timeout a mere 4:58 into the bout. In the following jam, North Star pivot Baller fought hard to not let Fanny Smack past her, but she was penalized for blocking too far away from the pack. She had to let Fanny Smack go, and Fanny Smack scored 4 points to take the first double-digit lead of the bout.

Slim Sadie cut the track almost immediately into the next jam, but the North Star defense kept Bri Zuss from escaping the pack. However, Slim Sadie committed another penalty later in the jam, and Bri Zuss finally got out with 46 seconds left. Her scoring passes weren’t nearly as physical, as two apex jumps gave her 8 points. North Star stopped the run after that courtesy of 3 points by Sassberry, but a quick 4 points by Twisted Transistor in the next jam put Minnesota up 32-12.

At the end of the last jam, Katarina Hit committed a penalty, giving Skatey Gaga a power start to the next one. She scored 4 points while Katarina Hit committed another penalty, leaving her in the box to start the next jam as well. Fanny Smack used the advantage to score 3 points, but a big hit by Red Panda prevented her from doing any more damage. Bri Zuss was first out in the next jam, but a no pass, no penalty situation prevented her from becoming lead. Slim Sadie was the lead jammer instead, but the confusion from the no pass, no penalty meant she wasn’t signaled as lead until she entered the pack on her scoring pass. She outscored Bri Zuss 8-5, with Bri Zuss picking up a penalty to remain in the box to start the next jam.

Sassberry took advantage of the power jam to score 4 points and trim the Supernovas’ deficit to 20 points. Wheelie Nelson responded with a tight 4-3 jam against Katarina Hit, but a late hit by Scam Likely meant Minnesota started the next jam with only one blocker on the track. Slim Sadie used the pack advantage to secure lead, but MNRD played tight defense when their blockers returned to the track. A jammer penalty by Twisted Transistor, though, helped Slim Sadie score 7 points and cut the lead to 14. Sensing their lead slipping away, Minnesota called a timeout after the jam.

Twisted Transistor remained in the box at the start of the next jam, where Sassberry took a quick lead and scored 8 points to cut the deficit to 6. After that, it took over a minute for Katarina Hit to secure lead, but 3 blocker penalties by North Star allowed Fanny Smack to outscore her 8-7. Minnesota couldn’t build on it in the next jam, though, as an early forearm penalty by Bri Zuss gave Slim Sadie a power jam. She scored 8 points, giving North Star a 57-56 lead.

The Supernovas’ first lead since early in the bout didn’t last long. Wheelie Nelson scored 4 points – sneaking them in just before Sassberry reached the pack – before Twisted Transistor added 4 more, giving Minnesota a 7-point cushion. Slim Sadie tried to respond, but after she became lead, Skatey Gaga passed her and forced her to call off the jam without scoring. Sassberry secured an early lead in the next jam, although she later lost it after committing a penalty. The North Star defense held firm, though, not letting Bi Fieri (who received a star pass from Fanny Smack) get through until there were 7 seconds left in the jam. Despite the late penalty, Sassberry scored 16 points to give North Star a 73-64 lead at halftime.

Sassberry remained in the box to start the second half, and Twisted Transistor took a quick lead and scored 4 points on the power jam. Bri Zuss followed that with 10 points, giving Minnesota the lead. The next jam was scoreless, keeping MNRD up 78-73. A physical jam followed, as it took Sassberry over a minute to become the lead jammer, and she ultimately lost lead privileges because of a penalty. She and Wheelie Nelson split the jam 3-3.

With Sassberry still in the box to start the next jam, North Star’s defense stopped Twisted Transistor long enough to get her back on the track. She almost became the lead jammer, but bridging by the Minnesota blockers kept her contained close enough to the pack for Twisted Transistor to secure lead instead. Twisted Transistor scored 7 points without reply, extending the lead to 88-76.

The next jam continued the penalty-filled bout. Bri Zuss committed another penalty, giving KiLLRoy a power jam. While she was ineligible for lead because she received a star pass, KiLLRoy fought to secure 6 points for the Supernovas. After leaving the box, Bri Zuss passed the Minnesota star to Bunnicula, who scored 1 point but was penalized after the jam following an official review. Katarina Hit took advantage of the power start to score 8 points, giving North Star the lead at 90-89.

Strong blocking by North Star helped Sassberry score 8 more in the next jam, making the score 98-89. After that, it was Minnesota’s turn to hold firm. They contained Slim Sadie (and later KiLLRoy) while Wheelie Nelson scored 7 points before being laid out to the inside of the track. Bri Zuss tacked on 3 more in the following jam, giving Minnesota  the lead at 99-98.

Twisted Transistor followed that with another 3-0 jam, but Fanny Smack committed a penalty early in the next jam. Then, she was sent to the box a second time after re-entering the track illegally. Slim Sadie used the two penalties to score 5 points, regaining the lead for North Star and causing Minnesota to call a timeout with 11:13 to play. With Fanny Smack still penalized to start the next jam, Katarina Hit added 3 more, increasing the Supernovas’ lead to 4.

Minnesota Nice then fell victim to yet another jammer penalty – this time, Wheelie Nelson went to the box – and Sassberry punished them by scoring 12 points. North Star led 118-102, which was their first double-digit lead of the bout. Skatey Gaga seemed poised to respond when she got a power jam, but it was cut short when she committed a penalty herself. The two-minute jam ended 7-4 for Skatey Gaga over Slim Sadie, but she failed to put much of a dent into North Star’s lead.

The responsibility to continue the comeback fell to Twisted Transistor, who secured lead jammer but was overtaken by Katarina Hit and forced to call it off without scoring. Needing to score for Minnesota, Bri Zuss committed a track cut along the outside to give Sassberry a power jam. Bri Zuss also committed a direction of gameplay penalty later in the jam. Helped by the two penalties, Sassberry scored 8 points to give North Star a 130-109 lead with 1:36 to go.

Bri Zuss was still in the box when the next jam started, and Katarina Hit took 17 seconds to become the lead jammer. Later in the jam, Bri Zuss committed her seventh penalty of the bout, which meant she would have fouled out if it weren’t the last jam of the bout. Katarina Hit scored 16 points before calling off the jam, putting the exclamation point on a 146-109 North Star win. The Supernovas closed the bout on a 48-7 run. Minnesota Nice has now dropped their last two bouts against North Star, and they finish the tournament 2-1.
