Have a Nice Day 2025 Day 3 Recap
Minnesota All-Stars vs Red Stick
On Sunday, the Minnesota All-Stars concluded their tournament with a matchup against Red Stick Roller Derby (#3 NA South, #20 GUR). Minnesota and the Baton Rouge, Louisiana-based team had never met before. Red Stick entered 1-1 in the tournament, losing a heartbreaker to regional rival Texas on Friday before beating Arizona on Saturday.
Both jammers had to fight hard for the first lead jam, and it was Lexi Cuter who finally got it for Minnesota over a minute in. Sparkles Fantastic followed close behind, holding Lexi Cuter to a 3-0 jam. In the next jam, both jammers escaped the pack almost simultaneously, and the officials awarded lead to Brawla Deen. Sintripetal Force immediately passed her and forced a call-off. After that, Whoopsie Daisy scored 9 for Minnesota, taking their lead up to 12-0.
Sparkles Fantastic put Red Stick on the board with 3 points in the next jam. After that, Brawla Deen fought through some tough Minnesota blocking to score 10 points, giving Red Stick their first lead of the day. It only lasted one jam, though, as Lexi Cuter answered with 6 for Minnesota. Sparkles Fantastic responded with 3 points in the following jam, though Minnesota snuck in a point just before she called it off, leaving their lead at 19-16.
After that, the bout became even more physical. Whoopsie Daisy used a lane created by blockers Rollin’ Rizz and Pretty Rackless on her way to 7 hard-fought points. Then, Chippa Tooth extended the Minnesota lead with 4 points, causing Red Stick to call a timeout. Lefse 4 Dead and Sparkles Fantastic both struggled to get through the pack in the next jam, and after a minute, Sparkles Fantastic finally secured lead. She outscored Lefse 4 Dead 8-4 to bring Red Stick back within 10.
Twinkle Toes also took over a minute to secure the next lead, eventually propelling herself through the pack with a jersey whip. She scored 6 points but was slow to call off the jam after being knocked to the ground, which let Lexi Cuter score 3. Sintripetal Force finally gave Minnesota a quick lead after that, scoring 4 points and putting MNRD up by 11. Whoopsie Daisy followed that with 8 points, continuing her strong day at the jammer line.
In the next jam, Twinkle Toes became the lead jammer, but she called it off without scoring after being overtaken by Chippa Tooth. Lexi Cuter followed that jam with a quick point for Minnesota. After that, Sparkles Fantastic came back with 7 for Red Stick. Twinkle Toes then gave them their second lead jam in a row, but a hard hit on the inside by Whoopsie Daisy forced a long recycle and limited her to 4 points. Still, that narrowed the gap to 50-41.
CometKaze then committed the first jammer penalty of the bout, which came 18 jams in. Chippa Tooth scored 3 points and froze her in the box to start the next jam, where Lexi Cuter added 4 more. Brawla Deen closed the half by outscoring Sintripetal Force 8-4, but Minnesota still had a 61-48 lead at halftime. The half was by far the cleanest that either team had played in the tournament.
Brawla Deen opened the second half by securing lead jammer for Red Stick, but she was knocked to the inside and called off the jam without scoring. Instead, Minnesota got on the second-half board first courtesy of 3 points by Sintripetal Force. Whoopsie Daisy then got a quick lead and exploded for 17 points while the Minnesota defense held Machu Beatchu to 4, extending their lead to 81-53.
After that, Brawla Deen scored 4 points, but Red Stick couldn’t build on it. Chippa Tooth got the next lead jam but forfeited it because of a penalty, giving Red Stick their first power jam. However, Sparkles Fantastic still struggled to get through the Minnesota wall and passed the star to Papaya on Fiyah. Despite the penalty, Chippa Tooth outscored Papaya on Fiyah 10-4 and raised Minnesota’s lead to 30 points.
The next jam featured more tight defense on both sides, but offensive blocking by Bizzquick helped Lexi Cuter complete her first of two scoring passes, posting 8 points in the jam. Sintripetal Force followed that with a massive 20-0 jam, though play was more physical than the score indicated. In the following jam, Whoopsie Daisy picked up two jammer penalties, although the second (a track cut) was caused by a trip by StabbyCat that was also deemed a penalty. Sparkles Fantastic used the advantage to outscore Whoopsie Daisy 11-4, but Minnesota’s lead still stood at 51.
Whoopsie Daisy remained in the box to start the next jam, which helped Brawla Deen make it out of the pack first (despite not becoming the lead jammer). Brawla Deen ultimately outscored Primm Reaper (who received a star pass from Whoopsie Daisy) 15-8 to trim the Minnesota advantage. Chippa Tooth lost the next jam’s lead privileges after committing a forearm penalty, but she still outscored Little Miss Maggot 7-3, re-extending the lead to 48 points.
Sparkles Fantastic got a power jam after that, but a no pass, no penalty situation stopped her from becoming the lead jammer. She scored 4 points, but without call-off privileges, she couldn’t stop Lexi Cuter from posting 3. In the next jam, Little Miss Maggot found herself jamming again, but Sintripetal Force outscored her 12-2 to take the MNRD lead back over 50. Lefse 4 Dead was the first jammer out in the next jam, but she also fell victim to a no pass, no penalty situation. Brawla Deen became lead despite getting out second, but Lefse 4 Dead still outscored her 4-2.
Sparkles Fantastic scored 3 points in the next jam, putting Red Stick over the century mark. They still trailed 157-101, and that became 161-101 after Chippa Tooth posted a long 4-0 jam for Minnesota. Red Stick took a timeout after the jam. 2:18 remained on the clock, meaning there would only be 2 jams left. While back-to-back 30-point jams are theoretically possible, all Minnesota had to do was stay out of the box and they would hold on to the lead.
To Red Stick’s credit, they kept fighting. Sparkles Fantastic scored 12 points in the next jam, while a penalty against MadLibs meant Red Stick would start the final jam on a power jam. Twinkle Toes secured a relatively quick lead and scored 4 points, but late in the jam, she was knocked out of bounds by MadLibs and forced to recycle. Since jammers are not required to stay in the pack, MadLibs tried to force Twinkle Toes to skate more than half the length of the track to recycle. Deciding it wasn’t worth it, Twinkle Toes called off the jam to end the bout.
Minnesota’s 161-117 win capped an impressive 3-0 tournament for the hosts, with Red Stick dropping to 1-2 in Hopkins. While the All-Stars have no more home bouts this summer, Minnesota Roller Derby will be back at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium for Season 22 in the fall.
