Have a Nice Day 2025 Day 1 Recap
Minnesota Nice vs Texas Chainsaws
The Have a Nice Day Tournament opened with a bout between Minnesota Nice (#37 NA Northeast, #37 GUR) and the Texas Rollergirls’ B-team, the Chainsaws (#28 NA South, #66 GUR). The teams had met once before, a 196-66 win for Texas in 2016.
Speed O raced out to the first lead jam of this bout for Texas, but a fast pack and a close jammer race with BooBoo held them scoreless. However, Texas got on the board in the next jam courtesy of 8 points by Mila Gritos. Meg Riot then tacked on 2 more, giving the Chainsaws an early 10-0 lead.
After that, T-Wrecks finally put Minnesota on the board with a 3-0 jam. Spread Eagle answered with a 3-0 jam for Texas, but BooBoo then used a power jam to score 11 points and give Minnesota their first lead of the bout at 14-13. In the next jam, Wheelie Nelson used an apex jump to score 4 points and extend Minnesota’s lead. Twisted Transistor then secured MNRD’s third straight lead jam and tried to do the same, but a fast pack held her to a single point. Still, Minnesota Nice had a 19-13 lead.
HELLZ KITTEN stopped Minnesota’s momentum with a quick 2-0 jam, setting up Spread Eagle to tie the bout at 19 when she posted a 4-0 jam. Speed O then added another 4-0 Texas jam, putting the Chainsaws back on top. The lead only lasted one jam, as Wheelie Nelson responded with 4 points for Minnesota. However, Meg Riot answered with 4 of her own, giving Texas the lead yet again.
Up 27-23, Spread Eagle secured lead jammer hoping to extend the Chainsaws’ lead, but she was sent to the penalty box and lost those privileges. T-Wrecks used the opportunity to score 8 points, but because there was no lead jammer, the jam went the full two minutes. That allowed Spread Eagle to score 9 points (including 4 on a spectacular apex jump), extending the lead by 1 after all.
It wasn’t enough, as Skatey Gaga followed that with 7 points, putting Minnesota ahead 38-36. However, Speed O came right back with a quick lead jam and skated along the outside untouched on their first scoring pass. They were knocked down on their second pass, but that didn’t stop them from posting a 6-0 jam and putting Texas back up by 4. Wheelie Nelson hoped to answer for Minnesota, and she secured lead jammer, but she was knocked out of bounds right after escaping the pack. That gave the pack time to catch up to her, forcing her to call off the jam before Meg Riot could score.
While Wheelie Nelson couldn’t take the lead for Minnesota, Twisted Transistor scored 7 points in the following jam to give them the lead anyway. After that, Spread Eagle hoped to respond for Texas, but she picked up a penalty. That gave Marty McFly – who had received a star pass – a power jam, and she electrified the crowd and the Minnesota bench by scoring 16 points. Smart Alex eventually scored 5 after a star pass of her own, but the resulting 61-47 Minnesota lead gave the hosts some breathing room.
The next jam featured tight blocking on the initial pass, with Speed O becoming lead jammer because they were dragged out by a teammate. However, Skatey Gaga wasn’t far behind, limiting Speed O to a single point. After that, Impact Play jammed for the first time all night, and she added 4 points for Texas. Meg Riot then continued the Chainsaws’ run of lead jams, but she was held scoreless after being hit to the outside and knocking over a referee. Twisted Transistor finally stopped the run after that, securing lead and a 4-0 jam to put Minnesota back up by 10.
T-Wrecks secured lead for Minnesota in the next jam, but she was held to 2 points by a fast pack. BooBoo followed with a quick lead along the outside, and she turned that into 3 points to put MNRD up 18. However, Wheelie Nelson committed a penalty in the next jam, giving Meg Riot a power jam. She only scored 2 points, but a Texas timeout with 2 seconds left in the half meant there would be one more jam. Impact Play tiptoed along the outside for a quick lead en route to an 11-2 jam, cutting the Chainsaws’ deficit to single digits. Still, Minnesota Nice led 72-65 at halftime.
BooBoo looked to give Minnesota the first lead jam of the second half, but she was called for a track cut when she exited the pack. On top of that, she was assessed a second penalty for not leaving the track in time, giving Speed O a minute-long power jam. They scored 11 points to give Texas a 76-72 lead, then they called off the jam with BooBoo still in the box to give Meg Riot a power start to the next jam. However, the Minnesota pack kept her contained long enough for BooBoo to leave the box and become the lead jammer. BooBoo scored 4 points, tying the bout back up at 76. After that, Twisted Transistor scored 10 points to give Minnesota the lead once again.
In the following jam, Wheelie Nelson was the first jammer out of the pack, but a no pass, no penalty situation prevented her from becoming the lead jammer. (She passed a Texas skater while neither of them were upright, preventing her from being lead jammer but not assessing her a penalty.) Despite not having lead privileges, Wheelie Nelson still outscored HELLZ KITTEN 4-0 and extended the MNRD lead to 90-76. T-Wrecks followed that with another 4-0 jam, but Impact Play answered with an 8-0 jam to bring the Chainsaws back within 10.
After that, the bout shifted back to quick jams. Wheelie Nelson posted a 3-0 jam, then a quick 4-0 jam for Twisted Transistor took Minnesota across the century mark with a 101-84 lead. Speed O answered by securing a lead jam for Texas, but they could only outscore T-Wrecks 3-2. BooBoo got that point back for Minnesota in the next jam, making it a 17-point lead once again. In the following jam, Wheelie Nelson erupted for 15 points, giving Minnesota their largest lead so far at 119-87.
Spread Eagle secured lead for Texas in the next jam, but she got her legs tangled with Minnesota pivot Sew Dangerous on an apex jump attempt and only scored 3 points. After that, T-Wrecks and HELLZ KITTEN traded 4-0 jams, then Impact Play spun her way along the inside to a lead jam and 2 points. Still, Texas trailed 123-96, and they needed a spark to get them back into the bout.
Spread Eagle scored 4 points in the next jam to put Texas over the century mark. In the following jam, neither defense was willing to let the other jammer through, and T-Wrecks finally secured lead after 50 seconds of trying to claw through the Texas pack. (Meanwhile, Impact Play was unsuccessful on 3 apex jump attempts.) After securing lead, T-Wrecks scored 5 points to put MNRD back up by 28. The Chainsaws needed to respond fast, and Meg Riot did her part with a 4-0 jam. Speed O followed with 3 quick points, pulling Texas within 21.
Wheelie Nelson responded with 3 points, but she was forced to call it off after being knocked out of bounds. Before she could do that, though, Spread Eagle scored 2 points for Texas. However, that didn’t spark anything for the Chainsaws, as BooBoo scored 4 points on an apex jump in the next jam. Twisted Transistor followed that with another 4-0 jam, then Wheelie Nelson added 6 more to put Minnesota up by 46 with 1:17 left. That meant there was time for one final jam, and although Spread Eagle secured lead for Texas, she was assessed a penalty and tied the jam 11-11 with T-Wrecks. The 156-120 Minnesota Nice win was the first ever win for a MNRD team over a Texas Rollergirls team, while the loss drops the Chainsaws to 1-9 in the last 12 months.
Minnesota All-Stars vs Arizona All-Stars
Friday’s action closed with a battle between the Minnesota All-Stars (#5 NA Northeast, #19 GUR) and the Arizona Roller Derby All-Stars (#13 NA West, #39 GUR). Entering the bout, Minnesota was 4-1 all-time against Arizona; their only loss was in the third place bout of the 2006 Dust Devil tournament, which served as the first unofficial WFTDA championships.
Lexi Cuter and Frida opened the bout at the jammer line, and it was Frida who secured lead jammer and won the jam 4-2 to give Arizona the lead. However, Sintripetal Force scored 3 points in the next jam, and just like that, Minnesota was in front. That didn’t last long, though, as Jaws BreakHer raced out to a quick lead as Whoopsie Daisy was sent to the box, giving Arizona a power jam. Jaws BreakHer used the advantage to score 8 points and put Arizona back on top. Lefse 4 Dead appeared to respond by securing lead for Minnesota, but she was assessed a track cut while exiting the pack. That allowed Hella Naughty to become lead jammer and score 6 points, taking Arizona’s lead to 18-5.
Next, it was Arizona’s turn to fall victim to jammer penalties, as two penalties by Gail Satan allowed Lexi Cuter to post an 8-0 jam. Gail Satan remained in the box when the next jam started, and Sintripetal Force added 4 points for Minnesota but failed to take the lead from Arizona. That responsibility fell to Annaconda, who scored 4 of her own to put MNRD ahead 21-18. Once again, Minnesota’s lead didn’t last long. In the next jam, the Arizona defense kept both Lefse 4 Dead (who started as the jammer) and Bizzquick (who received a star pass) from exiting the pack, allowing WestCoast MaFia to score 15 points and give Arizona a 33-21 advantage.
After that, Lexi Cuter secured another lead jam for Minnesota, but a fast pack limited her to 3 points. Hella Naughty then quickly negated that damage to Arizona’s lead, scoring 4 points to put them up by 13. However, Arizona couldn’t string any leads together, as Annaconda came right back with 3 points for Minnesota. Frida scored 1 point in the next jam, but Lexi Cuter followed that by outscoring WestCoast MaFia 7-4, cutting the Arizona lead to within single digits. Sintripetal Force then posted a 12-0 jam – Minnesota’s largest so far – to retake the lead at 46-42.
Despite Hella Naughty securing lead for Arizona, both she and Whoopsie Daisy were held scoreless in the next jam. Annaconda then doubled Minnesota’s lead with a 4-0 jam. After that, Lexi Cuter faced off against WestCoast MaFia, and even with a WestCoast MaFia penalty, neither jammer could escape the pack in the entire two minutes. Gail Satan became the lead jammer in the next jam, but she lost those privileges after committing a penalty. She ultimately split the jam 4-4 with Sintripetal Force, who finally escaped the pack with 42 seconds left in the jam. Before that, Minnesota jammers had been held on their initial pass for a combined 3:18 in the last two jams. Still, MNRD held an 8-point lead.
After Arizona’s defense had contained Minnesota jammers so well in the last two jams, Annaconda blew by them for a quick lead and 3 points. Then, it was Hella Naughty’s turn for a quick lead, but Lefse 4 Dead almost kept pace with her as the jam only went 4-3 for Hella Naughty. With Minnesota holding a 60-50 lead heading into the last jam of the half, that next jam was a turning point in the bout. Lexi Cuter posted an 8-0 jam, giving Minnesota the largest lead of the half at 18 points.
The momentum from that jam carried into the second half, as Frida committed a high block penalty just seconds into the first jam. That gave Annaconda a power jam opportunity, where she scored 3 points. Then, it was WestCoast MaFia’s turn to commit a jammer penalty, and Lexi Cuter followed in Annaconda’s footsteps by scoring 3 points on the power jam. Sintripetal Force followed that with a 7-0 jam, and just like that, Minnesota had a 31-point lead.
In the next jam, Frida was the first jammer out of the pack, but a no pass, no penalty situation prevented her from becoming lead jammer. (This time, it was because she passed a Minnesota skater when they were both out of bounds.) Whoopsie Daisy then became ineligible for lead privileges because she removed her helmet cover, ensuring the jam would go the full two minutes. By the time the jam expired, Frida outscored Whoopsie Daisy 7-3, cutting the MNRD lead to 27.
Both defenses held firm in the next jam, as it took Annaconda over a minute to become the lead jammer. Then, on her scoring pass, she fell victim to a hard hit by Arizona pivot Sure, man. Still, she scored 3 points, re-extending Minnesota’s lead to 30. Lexi Cuter followed that with a quick lead along the inside, but a fast pack limited her to 2 points. Hella Naughty secured the next lead, but Arizona once again fell victim to penalties. At one point, Colette Razorcat was their only blocker on the track, and that couldn’t contain Sintripetal Force. Hella Naughty kept the jam alive to kill the penalties, and, all things considered, she did well to only lose the jam 8-4.
While Hella Naughty avoided a jammer penalty, Gail Satan wasn’t so lucky in the next jam. The ensuing power jam allowed Lefse 4 Dead to score 8 points, with the crowd reaching its loudest point all night on her second scoring pass. That jam put Minnesota over the century mark, giving them a 105-61 lead. Gail Satan remained in the box to start the next jam, where Whoopsie Daisy extended the Minnesota advantage with 2 points. In the following jam, the pack moved behind the jammer line as soon as the whistle blew, keeping both jammers contained. After 50 seconds, Lexi Cuter finally got through, and she scored 3 points to widen the lead to 110-61.
At the very end of the jam, MsMURDR picked up a penalty while wearing the star for Arizona, giving Minnesota a power start to the next jam. Sintripetal Force scored 4 points while Skatie Katie (who received the star after MsMURDR left the box) committed a penalty herself, leaving her stranded in the box to start the next jam. With Arizona hoping for a change of pace, the next jam started with a fast pack, but Annaconda still posted a 3-0 jam for Minnesota. After that, Lefse 4 Dead secured a quick lead before yet another power jam opportunity, where she scored 7 points to extend the lead to 124-61.
The next jam was another early defensive struggle, but Minnesota blocker Poysenberry Pie returned from the penalty box to shove the pack and allow Lexi Cuter to get through. While she scored 7 points in the jam, Skatie Katie posted 2 for Arizona, giving them their first points in 7 jams. Sintripetal Force secured the next lead jam for Minnesota, but Jaws BreakHer passed her as the two exited the pack, keeping the jam scoreless. Arizona then finally got another lead jam courtesy of Frida, and she outscored Whoopsie Daisy 4-1 to trim their deficit to 132-67.
Annaconda responded with a quick lead, but a fast pack and pressure from WestCoast MaFia forced her to call off the jam without scoring. After that, Hella Naughty gave Arizona their largest jam of the half at 8-0, but she committed a late penalty to give Minnesota a power jam to start the next one. Lexi Cuter scored 4 points, but the jam also featured the seventh penalty for Arizona’s Mimi Mauler, causing her to foul out.
With one jam left, Sintripetal Force secured a quick lead, and she was also given a power jam courtesy of Frida. While Sintripetal Force could have called off the jam as soon as the game clock hit zero, she instead waited until Frida was out of the box. After scoring 11 points, she ended the jam at 147-75 for Minnesota. While Arizona’s defense frustrated Minnesota at times, the Minnesota defense was even stronger, holding Arizona to 21 points in the second half. Arizona also committed twice as many penalties as Minnesota over the course of the bout.
